Two people were hospitalized and part of Okeechobee Road was shut down Thursday night after a crash in Hialeah involving two motorcycles, according to Hialeah police.

The crash happened a few minutes before 8 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Okeechobee Road near West 11th Avenue.

It involved two motorcycle, each a large cruiser carrying two people and with very small trailers attached to them, Hialeah police spokesman Detective Eddie Rodriguez said.

Somehow, one of the motorcycles lost control and threw a passenger from the bike but kept rolling, Rodriguez said.

The second motorcycle somehow tipped over, he said. What caused this and if one motorcycle hit the other was still under investigation Thursday night, Rodriguez said.

After the crash, two people were taken by helicopter to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Two other people from the motorcycles refused to be transported.

Police were interviewing witnesses Thursday night as well as the two people who didn’t go to the hospital. The crash forced the northbound lanes of Okeechobee Road closed for an extended period of time while police investigated.
