I read with incredulity the Dec. 14 Other Views column, Florida and the healthcare law, written by State Rep. Richard Corcoran and State Sen. Joe Negron. In it they detail the start of the Select Committees on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to assess the impact on Florida. The committees will meet for the next two months to prepare for full debate in the legislative session beginning March 5.
They kind of missed the boat since Dec. 14 also marked the end of the extended decision period for the states to notify Washington if they will create their own insurance exchanges under the law. This great timing, of course, was caused by Gov. Scott’s refusal to participate pending the overturn of the law by the Supreme Court and waiting to see if President Obama would be defeated.
So, after the train has left the station the Republican-led legislature is going to study the timetable. Maybe they will come up with answers by 2014 when the full law takes effect.
