Why arent the talented Suns part of the discussion?
Theyre as talented as those three teams, but they have moments where they lose focus, said Fishbein, who ranked his final five in this order: 1. Booker T.; 2. St. Thomas; 3. Central; 4 University; 5. Apopka.
They fell behind 17-0 to Madison County in the title game. Booker T. and Central dont lose focus. They pounce on you. I also dont know if University has the depth. The Suns beat some tough schools [Trotwood, Ohio, finished as the Division II runner-up in Ohio, 4A semifinalist Cocoa]. But they werent playing their best at the end.
• Cypress Bay senior Alex Montgomery, who hauled in a state record 199 yards receiving and three touchdowns on nine catches and also made eight tackles on defense in Saturdays 53-50 loss to Apopka, was by far the player who impressed scouts the most.
Id be hard pressed to find a better effort in the finals than Montgomery, Long said. I dont think anybody helped themselves more with recruiting. Maybe John OKorn. But Montgomery put himself on another level. Maybe he doesnt have the super speed, but he obviously has the hands and courage and ability to be a special player.
Montgomery (6-2, 210) has a 2.8 GPA and scored a 1,310 on his SAT. He said last week he had offers from North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Mississippi, Marshall, UCF, Rutgers and Louisville. All of them want him at receiver. Georgia recently asked him if he would be willing to play defense.
Hes a receiver at the next level in my eyes, Fishbein said.
• Centrals Lockette said after Saturdays win he is already trying to set up a road game at national power Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) next season. Bosco won at Aquinas 20-10 earlier this season.
Im also going to try and see if we can play Aquinas, Lockette said. We already know were going to play Booker T. for sure.
