A former Miami Springs Middle teacher is facing two new lawsuits alleging child sex abuse.
Carlos Usatorres, who used to teach P.E. at the middle school, was recently rearrested for contacting another youth who charged him with abuse through the social networking site Tumblr.
Jeff Herman filed the new lawsuits against the Miami-Dade School Board Thursday.
According to the complaints, each student -- two of whom are sisters -- was about 13 or 14 years old when Usatorres engaged them in sexual contact in his office.
The complaints allege that the principal of the school at the time, Maria Mason, learned that Usatorres was having female students undress and change clothes in front of him, in private in his office. But the principal did not take any action against the P.E. teacher, except warning him not to have students change clothes in his office, according to the complaint, and Usatorres continued to teach.
In fact, the lawsuit alleges that another teacher notice “red flags” concerning Mr. Usatorres’ interaction with another a female middle-school student, who is named as S.W. in the complaint.
“This included but was not limited to, Mr. Usatorres’ holding hands with her in the school’s courtyard, giving S.W. obvious special attention, intervening inappropriately to protect S.W. from being disciplined by other teachers, and being alone with S.W. in the P.E. office with the lights off. Additionally, upon information and belief, Principal Mason became aware that Mr. Usatorres routinely allowed female students to change clothes in his office.”
The Miami-Dade district’s spokesman John Schuster declined to comment. “The school district does not comment on pending or potential litigation.”
