Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez suffered complications during the cancer surgery he underwent two days ago in Cuba, but is now stable and recovering, Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said Thursday.

In a televised address, Villegas said the 58-year-old leader’s recovery could be delayed because “it was a complex intervention and there were complications that arose during the procedure.”

Villegas said bleeding during the operation “required the adoption of corrective measures.”

Chávez traveled to Cuba on Monday for a fourth round of surgery to treat an undisclosed form of cancer he has been battling since at least June 2011.

Villegas said the president will undergo “additional specific treatments” in coming days.

Chávez, who won reelection in October, is scheduled to be sworn-in to a fourth term on Jan. 10. But Villegas has said the nation needs to be “prepared” if the ailing leader is not back by then.
