While it is easy to get caught up in the sensationalized start to the modern holiday season — Black Friday fever and Cyber Monday madness — The Miami Foundation prefers to focus on the other instinct that is heightened at this time of year: the desire to give back.
Holiday philanthropic giving has been a long-standing tradition in our community as individuals and families seek to brighten the lives of those most in need. The truth is there are a number of people and organizations in our community that make this altruistic goal a year-round undertaking. Every day in Miami, nonprofits and their dedicated staff and volunteers are on the ground, making sure our homeless are cared for, our children grow up in safe, healthy environments, and all our residents are enriched through culture and the arts. This holiday season, we should commit to supporting the work of these organizations that do so much for our community.
Together with our Fundholders, The Miami Foundation works daily to support the work of our nonprofit partners and build a greater Miami through philanthropy. On Wednesday, we invite the entire Miami community to join us.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, Miami Children’s Museum, Art Center/South Florida and American Red Cross of Greater Miami & the Keys, along with more than 300 other Miami-Dade County nonprofit organizations, are registered for our inaugural Give Miami Day. The Miami Foundation, with support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will launch the unique, online giving event that ignites individuals in the community to support those organizations working to improve our city. For 24 hours on December 12, 2012, the public can learn about and contribute to nonprofits across Miami-Dade GiveMiamiDay.org. Existing and new donors will be able to see the mission, work and impact of each organization and make a contribution to support an organization’s work, all on the GiveMiamiDay.org site. Every donation between $25 and $10,000 received through GiveMiamiDay.org on that day will have a percentage of the gift matched by The Miami Foundation.
What makes Give Miami Day so unique is the website platform we have built for it. GiveMiamiDay.org connects to a database of more than 300 nonprofit organizations serving this community. All of them have carefully built profiles telling their story — giving people a better understanding of their results and the impact of their services. Interested donors can browse through hundreds of nonprofits organized into categories and programming targets. GiveMiamiDay.org provides the transparency donors need to make the kinds of decisions that turn a simple act of giving into a wise investment.
We hope that today more Miamians will make charitable contributions than on any other day in Miami’s history. I firmly believe that by connecting our community’s needs with philanthropy, we can make Miami a better place for everyone. As you prepare your end-of-year charitable donations, please consider making them on Give Miami Day. It is the one day when your gift will truly give more.
In 24 hours, let’s make a world of difference for those doing the best work for Miami.
Javier Alberto Soto is president and CEO of The Miami Foundation.
