Dolphins offensive line VS. 49ers defensive front
Who won: 49ers.
The impact: The Dolphins had to shuffle things after Jake Long was injured against the Patriots last week and subsequently put on injured reserve. Rookie Jonathan Martin moved from right tackle to replace Long and struggled at times. In the second, Aldon Smith ran over Martin to sack Ryan Tannehill — not long after Martin and Nate Garner (who replaced Martin at right tackle) were called for false starts on consecutive plays.
Dolphins special teams VS. 49ers special teams
Who won: 49ers.
The impact: After making key mistakes on special teams in the previous three games, Miami made it four consecutive against the 49ers. The Dolphins’ first big gaffe came in the second when Jonathan Freeny grabbed a punt at the 3 and never downed it. Miami then gave the 49ers key field position in the third quarter when Marcus Thigpen muffed a punt inside the 10. On the plus side, San Francisco’s Ted Ginn Jr. was a nonfactor on punt returns.
Dolphins pass defense VS. 49ers passing game
Who won: 49ers.
The impact: It took Colin Kaepernick a little while to get going, although he didn’t do anything really special thanks to a running game that did most of the damage. Kaepernick, who took off for a 50-yard score with 2:19 left, completed 18 of 23 passes for 185 yards — fewest of his four starts in place of Alex Smith. Kaepernick should have had a third-quarter TD had Randy Moss (who was interfered with by R.J. Stanford) held onto a nicely thrown ball into the end zone.
