Good for Michelle Kaufman for exposing abusive parents in her Dec. 6 column, Ugly part of scenery. Hopefully the column will be read by some of these parents who have lost their perspective, and jar them enough to alter their disgusting behavior.
Sadly, child abuse has been going on for years in many of our children’s sports. I coached 5-16 year-old children in baseball, soccer and basketball and unfortunately there were times that I suggested to some abusive parents that the team would be better off if they left the field until the game had concluded.
Ion 1989, during a little league baseball game, my team’s 11-year-old catcher struck out and threw his bat in frustration. I explained to him that he could’ve been ejected for bat throwing and that he should calm down. As he left the field his father grabbed him and threw him backwards into the backstop in front of 50-60 shocked fans. In a twisted irony, two years later his father was made commissioner of the league. Go figure.
