This weekend only, Lennar is hosting a VIP Hard Hat Tour event at Napa at The Vineyards in Homestead. The event is for home buyers who want to be among the first to see the Next Gen – The Home Within a Home, the developer’s newest floor plan, which is a practical solution to multigenerational living, says a company spokesperson.

Prospective buyers are encouraged to take the whole family, enjoy refreshments and snacks, and get a VIP tour of the new Next Gen homes being built in the sought-after community, says the spokesperson. Home buyers in the market for a single-family home are also welcome to tour the single-family homes that are currently available.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau, “The number of multigenerational households has increased by 60 percent since 1990.” The dramatic change in the American lifestyle is primarily due to two trends, says the spokesperson. First, baby boomers are living longer and are faced with deteriorating pensions, a failing Social Security system and increasing healthcare costs. Second, college debt and the amplified cost of living means that many children move back home after college, and stay for several years.

According to John Graham, co-author of Together Again, a book about multigenerational living and professor of Marketing and International Business at University of California Irvine, “We are seeing the nuclear family going back to the interdependence of the extended family. For the last 50 years the American ideal was the nuclear family living independently, but with the economic changes of recent decades that no longer is the solution of choice.” He added, “Multigenerational living is very customary in most countries. It is now becoming much more common in the U.S. I am happy to see progressive builders like Lennar addressing this change.”
