I felt as if I had written Ana Veciana-Suarez’s Dec. 1 column, The joy of reading a true gift. I, too, give books on a regular basis to children at any opportunity I find or create. It was someone like Veciana-Suarez, I suppose, who wrapped a book for me and placed it under the tree — not a picture book, which I took out of the school library regularly, but the kind of book with long chapters and few illustrations. It wasn’t a great classic, but Five Little Peppers and How They Grew that sparked an interest in reading that has held me ever since.
I’m not delusional enough to think all those books are being read, but books so enriched my childhood after that one book because of all the ones I read after it. Thank you, Ana, and whoever gave me that first book. I’ve been grateful ever since.
