I agree with Michael Putney’s Nov. 27 Other Views column, Prayer and politics, that the re-instatement of an opening prayer at Miami-Dade Commission meetings is a hollow gesture. However, his assertion that “The Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and Constitution are replete with references to the Creator” is false.
There’s no reference to a deity in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. In fact, the only mention of religion in the Constitution regards the restriction of Congress from laws regarding establishment of religion and proscription of religious tests for public office holders.
References to a creator in the Declaration of Independence, didn’t survive for mention in the Constitution.
