Philly Ace, Closing Range win features in Calder season finale

Philly Ace beat Hollinger by a half length in the $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (Grade 3) on Friday as Calder Casino & Race Course ended its 2012 racing season.

Philly Ace, at 3-1, was third entering the stretch of the 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds and up. He rallied on the outside and won in 1:49.22 under jockey Luis Saez.

In Friday’s co-feature, Closing Range led gate-to-wire and defeated Ciao Bella by 2 3/4 lengths in the $100,000 La Prevoyante Handicap (Grade 3) for fillies and mares 3 years old and up.

Elvis Trujillo rode Closing Range, who won the 1 1/2-mile turf stakes in 2:27.54.

Meet Leaders

Calder’s closing day brought its three-month Tropical Meet to an end.

Saez led jockeys in victories with 118.

He was followed by Hugo Sanchez with 74 and Manoel Cruz with 56.

Saez also was the leading rider in last year’s Tropical Meet and in this year’s Calder meet from April through August.

Steve Dwoskin led trainers with 31 wins, with Kathleen O’Connell second with 24, followed by Luis Ramirez with 23 and David Fawkes with 22.

Frank Calabrese led owners with 34 victories.

Starship Stables finished second with 19 wins. Dwoskin is the trainer for Starship Stables. Dwoskin came in third in the owners standings with 12 wins.

Calder Schedule

Calder’s racing building will be open daily for simulcast wagering during the Gulfstream Park meet that begins Saturday.

Calder will begin its 2013 racing season on April 6.
