A Miami-Dade Transit bus struck and killed a woman Thursday night in Aventura.

The accident happened near Northeast 199th Street and 29th Place, north of the Aventura Mall. Because it involved a county bus, Aventura authorities said the investigation would be handled by Miami-Dade police.

Miami-Dade police did not immediately release any information about the accident. A Miami-Dade Transit spokeswoman said no one on the bus was hurt.

The woman’s family told Miami Herald news partner CBS 4 that she was Barbara Rubenstein, an 84-year-old widow and snowbird from the Chicago area who had kept a condominium in Aventura, near the mall, for years.

Her family said she loved professional sports as much as her soap operas. She volunteered and helped promote local performing arts, her family said.

Her daughter told CBS 4 that Rubenstein was fiercely independent and decided Thursday to get groceries at the nearby Publix supermarket and then see a movie at the mall.

She was struck, CBS 4 reported, while crossing the street in front of the supermarket.
