A woman was arrested after her 6-year-old son was found wandering alone in the streets early Thursday morning near his Miami home, according to police.

Rosa Carolina Recarte Gomez, 30, was charged with child neglect, and her son was placed with her friend.

“He was alone and scared,” said Miami police spokesman William Moreno. “Luckily, he was OK.”

According to the arrest report, someone saw the boy walking around at about 3:50 a.m. in the area of Southwest 14th Avenue and First Street and called police. The boy told police he had woken up and couldn’t find his mother.

After realizing the door was locked, he used a wooden duck to break a window and climb out, the report states.

The boy told police his mother’s name and information and police tried several times to reach her by cell phone. Police finally reached her at home and she agreed to go to the Special Victims Office.

Gomez later told police she went to a friend’s house and had left the boy alone, sleeping “since he usually sleeps all night,” the report states.

The Department of Children and Families was contacted, Mareno said.

“We never recommend leaving a child that young alone,” Mareno said. “Children are going to be children.”
