Columbus grapplers wrestle win from Palmetto

Despite having to forfeit four matches and players moving up to higher weight classes to compensate for injuries, the Columbus wrestling team pinned down a 54-28 win against Palmetto on Wednesday.

Mike Sierra led the Explorers (3-0) with a 47-second pin against the Panthers’ Andrew Sallato in the 170-pound weight class.

Columbus finished last season as the District 15-3A champion. The team went on to place second in the regional finals and GMAC. Then Explorers took a fourth-place finish in the state championship.

This season they will have some challenges to overcome since they are missing some talent in the upper weight classes, but the coaching staff is confident.

“We have several experienced kids in the middle weights — that is where we are strong,” Columbus coach Jim Husk said.

“We were ranked No.2 [by The Miami Herald] right behind South Dade. We have a pretty good team this year. We had to forfeit four weight classes but then we had seven pins in a row. We came out psyched, and they did really well. Palmetto has a very good program, and that made it a very good win for us. ”
