Monarch boys topple Douglas on last-second goal

After trailing Douglas through most of the match, the Monarch boys’ soccer teamed rallied on a last-second goal by Arthur Cardoso for a 4-3 victory Wednesday.

Cordoso took a pass with seconds remaining from Erik Dondov to win the match. Gabe Menescal led the Knights with two goals and an assist.

“We were down 1-0 in the first six minutes into the game. We gave up goals at the end of the first half, and at the beginning of the second — worst possible time to give up goals,” Monarch coach Stephen Lornec said.

“It was a great comeback. We scored with seconds to the 80 minutes, but I don’t think we were prepared to play a good Douglas team. But we came back from 1-3 and persevered.”

Monarch has six wins and a draw against Cypress Bay. It has defeated West Broward, Deerfield Beach and West Boca High, but it has a tough week ahead with a rematch against Deerfield Beach on Monday. The Knights will then play Boca High on Tuesday and Taravella on Thursday. The Knights lost to Boca High in the regional championship last season.
