The Big Orange goes Naranja

The Big Orange will become La Gran Naranja on New Year’s Eve.

The neon orange wearing sunglasses, a vestige of downtown Miami’s Orange Bowl parade, drops each year at midnight at the Intercontinental Hotel in the style of the apple in New York’s Time Square.

This year, it will be renamed in Spanish as part of Florida’s three-year tourism campaign highlighting Florida’s Spanish heritage. Spanish explorers brought the orange from Europe to the Americas in the 1500s. The campaign starts Jan. 1.
