Favorite Kya One captures My Charmer Handicap at Calder

Special to The Miami Herald

Kya One rallied from sixth place after a half mile and beat Naples Bay by 1 1/4 lengths on Thursday in the $100,000 My Charmer Handicap (Grade 3) at Calder Casino & Race Course.

Janicellaine finished third in the seven-horse field in the 1 1/8-mile turf stakes for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

The victory was the first in the United States for Kya One, a 4-year-old who won five of her 19 starts in France.

As the 9-5 favorite, she was ridden by Paco Lopez and won in 1 minute, 47.40 seconds on a course listed as firm.

In her debut in the United States on Sept. 15, Kya One finished fifth behind winner Naples Bay in the Noble Damsel Stakes on the turf at Belmont Park.

Now trained by Chad Brown, Kya One on Thursday showed that she has adjusted to racing in the United States.

Wicked Night led Speak Easy Gal by a length after a half mile in 47.16 seconds.

Kya One was 4 1/2 lengths back in sixth and on the inside. Lopez then angled her outside, and she took the lead about 200 yards from the wire.

“At the three-eighths pole, I had a good position and then when I pushed my filly she started running hard and she finished strong,” Lopez said.

Many of the horses from the My Charmer can be expected to run in turf stakes at Gulfstream Park, which will begin its race meet on Dec. 1.
