Letters to the Editor

Such blessings

In 1968, I was 17 and living in Queens, N.Y. That is when I cooked my first Thanksgiving dinner. I had come from Havana, Cuba only three years earlier, and this holiday was new to us. New York was a big, beautiful, exciting city totally different from what I knew, cold, but I loved it. Mami prepared the usual Cuban meal, and Papi asked me to cook the traditional American feast: turkey, mashed potatoes, string beans, jams, cranberries, apple pie and pumpkin pie. I did, and it all came out delicious!

Later, we all sat down and watched Miracle on 34th Street, with Maureen O’Hara. It was the first time I had ever seen the movie, but I’ve seen it at least 100 times since.

I thank God for giving me the precious opportunity of having the most wonderful family a person could ask for, and for allowing me to be in the greatest country in the world.

Juneteenth — a celebration of freedom

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with the news that the war had ended and freed all remaining slaves. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation — which had become official on Jan. 1, 1863.

  • Bees not news

Re the June 16 story Miami couple saddened after bee hive destroyed: It must have been a slow news day for the Miami Herald. This article took up two-thirds of a page in the newspaper’s local section.

  • Bees could be saved

An experienced bee keeper could have moved the beehive to a less troublesome location; perhaps on the couple’s property where they could continue to enjoy the bees and the bees could continue to do their good work.
