TEAM OF THE WEEK

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ cross-country team captured an elusive state title behind freshman Alexa Cruz, who clocked 18:14 to finish second and Christina Kalis, Brianna Rischar, Marina Braynon-Moore, Megan Schloss and Lily Kloepfer going 11-13-15-18-29 at the Class 4A state finals.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Michael Allinder, Miramar, football: Allinder’s 24-yard field goal held up as Miramar (7-4) sacked South Plantation quarterback John Franklin eight times and upset the Paladins 3-0 in the Region 3-8A quarterfinals.

Julia Montgomery, Pine Crest, girls’ cross-country: The freshman won the Class 2A state title to become the first state champion in school history and propel the Panthers to a school-best second-place finish.

Daesha Rogers, American Heritage, girls’ cross-country: Rogers finished third at the Class 2A state finals.

Natora Landers, Boyd Anderson, girls’ basketball: Landers scored a game-high 22 points to help the Cobras edge Plantation 43-41.

Matt Dayes, Cypress Bay, football: Dayes rushed for 184 yards and four TDs to lead the Lightning (9-2) over Deerfield Beach 41-13 in the Region 3-8A quarterfinals.

Autumn Clark, Jordyn Elliot and Julia Moore, Pine Crest, girls’ soccer: Clark, Elliot and Moore each scored in a 3-1 victory over Chaminade.

Anthony Deleva, Coral Glades, boys’ cross-country: Deleva capped his breakout junior season by finishing eighth in a Broward-best 15:55.33 at the 4A state finals.

Aisha Edwards, Coral Springs Charter, girls’ basketball: Edwards scored 17 points as the Panthers (2-1) held on for a 61-58 victory over Class 7A power Nova.

Alexander Haugen, Matthew Butler, Antony Cruz, St. Thomas Aquinas, boys’ cross-country: Haugen, Butler, and Cruz went 9-16-21 to help the Raiders finish a school-best and Broward boys’ best third at the 4A state finals.

John Belfort, Blanche Ely, boys’ soccer: Belfort scored the game-winning goal to propel the Tigers over Hollywood Hills 1-0.

Jordan Scarlett and Lajuan Hunt, University School, football: Hunt and Scarlett combined for 306 rushing yards to propel the Suns (9-0) past Cardinal Newman 27-0 in the Region 4-3A semifinals.

Diamond Williams, Cardinal Gibbons, girls’ basketball: Williams had a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds to lead the Chiefs over Western 67-38.
