•  Region 4-2A semifinal — Dade Christian 39, Village Academy 16: It had been two weeks since Dade Christian (10-0) last played, and the early stages of Friday’s game showed the rust. Still, the team was able to come away with the victory against Village Academy (4-6) in the 4-2A regional semifinals and will play Glades Day in the regional final next week.

“We came out flat, and I think not playing last week hurt us a bit,” coach Mike Sonnenborn said. “We came out a bit sluggish, but we played our kind of football in the second half.”

Dade Christian struggled offensively in the first half, committing three key turnovers as it drove down the field. Despite the problems it had early on, it took the lead on a high snap that went into the back of the end zone for a safety.

Dade Christian fell behind on a Shawndarius Phillips 10-yard run in the final minute of the first half. That deficit would be short-lived though as Gary Sampson threw the first of his three touchdown passes on the final play of the first half.

The defense tipped the ball right into the hands of Terrence Alls for a 60-yard score, and the teams went into the dressing room tied at 8.

BURNS SELECTED

The Under Armour All-America All-Star Game finished its selection tour of South Florida football schools, picking up one more talented athlete to add to its roster.

Miami Northwestern defensive back Artie Burns, a University of Miami commitment, was officially presented with his game jersey at a ceremony at the school Friday morning.

Burns joins Booker T. Washington linebacker Matthew Thomas as Miami-Dade County’s representatives in the event, which is scheduled for Jan. 4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

The game will also feature St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Joey Bosa, University School defensive tackle Maquedius Bain, wide receiver Jordan Cunningham and Northeast wide receiver Stacy Coley.

Burns has 67 tackles, two interceptions and has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season.

“It’s the greatest because a lot of kids don’t get an opportunity like this,” Burns said. “It’s hitting me today, especially seeing how it made my momma smile. That’s always a good thing.”
