Liberty City Optimist celebrates Pop Warner championship, top honor

Submit youth football, cheerleading info, photos

Sports Scene is a Miami Herald feature that spotlights news and notes from all youth and adult sports activities with a Miami-Dade slant. The aim of the section is to feature game notes and the accomplishments of individual players from Miami-Dade County, along with league and park standings.

With youth football starting (flag and tackle), submit game notes on Miami-Dade players and teams -- win, lose or draw. Cheerleading programs can submit Cheerleaders of the Week regularly.

To be fair to everyone, we rely on the directors and the coaches of each league and the community to send information for Sports Scene. The more you send, the more space for your player, team, program, sport. We also accept photos, but we ask that everyone pictured be identified with a first and last name and the name of the team or park they represent. If possible, please include the name of the photographer.

The head coach is William Cortright, and the assistant coaches are Sean Beaubien, Erik Bustillo, Kelvin Durham, Roy Hicks and Charles Troutman.

• Major Craig McQueen, the vice president of GMSF Pop Warner and commissioner of Miami PAL, presented finalists with medals and a huge team trophy. GMSF Pop Warner, under the direction of President Frank Gowin, features 19 programs from Florida City to Lauderhill. There are more than 5,000 kids, age 6-15, participating in GMSF Pop Warner football and cheerleading.

Palmetto Bay Broncos/Pop Warner

The Palmetto Bay Broncos football team won the Sean Taylor Classic in Pee Wee Division II at Curtis Park in Miami. The Coconut Grove Titans were runners-up.

The Sean Taylor Classic, named after the former Gulliver Prep High School, University of Miami and Washington Redskins star football player, awards the Greater Miami South Florida Pop Warner champions in each division.

The champs are: Alejandro Caula, Robert Crockett III, Dante DeRosa, Trey Flowers, Charles Forment, Jordan Griffin, Kenneth Hall, Tyler Harrell, Lennox Howard, Malcolm Hyppolite, Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste, Kenneth Kolodziejczak, Bryan Lima, Matthew Lopez, Dawayne Mason, Cornelius Nunn, Matthew Porry, Amari Rackley, Cairiq Rackley, Tasheem Reese, Melvin Rogers Jr., Marcus Smith Jr., Tarod Snead, Joshua Torres, Kane Vandemark, Jason Vaughn, Eddie Williams Jr. and Adrian Winfrey. The head coach is Shane Vandemark, and the assistant coaches are Patrick Burrows, Travis Cooper, Jorge Garrigo, Reginald Murray and Charles Rackley.

The runners-up: Christopher Berryhill, Archie Bolden, Jared Bradwell, Wayne Brooks, Tavarus Cohen, Quentin Collins, Alonzo Cooper, Marquise Fleming, Howard Hommer, Kama Jackson III, Kieleil Jones, Derrick Martin, Devin Mikell, Fashawn Renejuste, Stringer Sacorey, Derian Scott, David Swain and Antwan Walker. the head coach is Maurice Mays, and the assistant coaches are Joey Johnson and Porsche Stanley.

ASD soccer camps

The University of Miami–Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities partnered with Odebrecht USA to host three soccer camps for 24 children age 5-12 with autism spectrum disorders.

Odebrecht hosted the free soccer camps at Tamiami Park in Miami on three consecutive Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The final camp concluded with the ceremonial trophy presentation. Odebrecht underwrote the camps financially and staffed the camps with their employees proving their commitment to the community.

  • Be a South Florida STAR, win WWE tickets

    In an effort to recognize deserving South Florida youth who promote the values of the Be a STAR anti-bullying program, World Wrestling Entertainment in conjunction with The Miami Herald is accepting nominations for a special meet-n-greet before a WWE show at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

The Miami Rowing Club girls’ Junior 8 won the state championship in Sarasota. They are Gaby Diaz (coxswain), Abby Sorenson (stroke), Yailene Herrera Ortiz (seventh seat), Adrienne Orriols (sixth seat), Kamila Vasquez (5 seat), Samantha Salazar (fourth seat), Pilar Bancalari (third seat), Sol Helou (second seat) and Marissa Lynn Williford (bow).
