Liberty City Optimist celebrates Pop Warner championship, top honor

Sports Scene is a Miami Herald feature that spotlights news and notes from all youth and adult sports activities with a Miami-Dade slant. The aim of the section is to feature game notes and the accomplishments of individual players from Miami-Dade County, along with league and park standings.

With youth football starting (flag and tackle), submit game notes on Miami-Dade players and teams -- win, lose or draw. Cheerleading programs can submit Cheerleaders of the Week regularly.

To be fair to everyone, we rely on the directors and the coaches of each league and the community to send information for Sports Scene. The more you send, the more space for your player, team, program, sport. We also accept photos, but we ask that everyone pictured be identified with a first and last name and the name of the team or park they represent. If possible, please include the name of the photographer.

Liberty City Warriors/Pop Warner football

The Liberty City Optimist Warriors 120s football team won its third consecutive championship defeating the Northwest Boys & Girls Club Falcons 30-0 in Pee Wee Division I of the of the Sean Taylor Classic at Curtis Park in Miami.

The Sean Taylor Classic, named after the former Gulliver Prep High School, University of Miami and Washington Redskins star football player, awards the Greater Miami South Florida Pop Warner champions in each division.

The Warriors (9-0) recorded their seventh shutout. Chatarius Atwell, Jacob Baptiste, Tyrus Clinch, Derek Gainous, Juan Henry, Deryle Jackson, Aaron Taylor and Trenell Troutman helped anchor that stingy defense. Atwell, also the quarterback, scored twice as did Troutman. Baptiste added a touchdown.

Liberty City qualified for regionals. The past two seasons the Warriors were runners-up at nationals.

The champs are: Keon Armstrong, Chatarius Atwell, Jacob Baptiste, Raheem Barry, Samuel Brooks Jr., Raymond Carter, Romond Carter, Justin Chandler, Tyrus Clinch Jr., Derek Gainous, Jamel Greene, Nicholas Hanks, Juan Henry, Deryle Jackson, Javas Jackson, Einsley Joseph, Calijah Kancey, Eric Lynch, Leon McClain, Sharod Oliver, Kharig Pitts-Jones, Everald Reid Jr., Marquice Robinson, Eldrick Slocum, Aaron Taylor, Trenell Troutman, Maurice Underwood, Blake Veargis and David Wilson. The head coach is Robert Jones, and the assistant coaches are Lonnie Culpepper III, Ronald Hartsfield, Lorenzo Shinhoster, Aaron Taylor and Gary Watts.

The runners-up are: Jean Annosier, Marvin Anthony, Kelvin Barnes, Edouard Brazile, Willie Bentley, Titus Blount, Thomas Burns, Tyriq Charles, Dan Gabriel, Machi Garland, Mortavis Graham, David Green, Jamarie Harrison, Dextan Hodge, Randy Hudson, Jaylen Johnson, Trayqwan Johnson, Deshawn Joseph, Tavares Kelly, Jeremiah Louissaint, Tarant Miller, Keyshawn Paul, Oltebert Pierre, Antoine Rolle, Marco Smith and Refred Spillman. The head coach is Reginald McKnight Jr., and the assistant coaches are Kiyati Brown, Marvin Chatman, Chris Cooper, Anthony Johnson and Don Latimer.

• The Liberty City Optimist Warriors were finalists in Jr. Bandit. The runners-up are: Keimoni Riley, Vincent Shavers, Alonza Ward, Hezekiah Harris, D’Vontae Ballard, Sir’Malik Muhammad, Lloyd Godfrey, Nathaniel Jones, Cornelius Graham, Zaden Laing-Taylor, Latron Gore, Rechard Bartley, Roshawn Jones, Markel Easterling, Jahner Oakley, Bruce Early, Leron Campbell, Ronell Campbell, Le’Robert Little, Javaris Foster, Johnny Hall, Nairobi Dixon, Marques Hodgson, Kareem Maycock and Keith Keels. The head coach is Marcus Grant, and the assistant coaches are Joshua Harris, Carlos Hodgson, Charles Johnson and Vincent Shavers.

• Major Craig McQueen, the vice president of GMSF Pop Warner and commissioner of Miami PAL, presented finalists with medals and a huge team trophy. GMSF Pop Warner, under the direction of President Frank Gowin, features 19 programs from Florida City to Lauderhill. There are more than 5,000 kids, age 6-15, participating in GMSF Pop Warner football and cheerleading.

Greater Miami SF Pop Warner HOF

Sam Johnson meant so much to Greater Miami South Florida Pop Warner Football, especially the Liberty City Optimist Warriors program.

Johnson was inducted into the Greater Miami South Florida Pop Warner Hall of Fame during the Sean Taylor Classic at Curtis Park in Miami. His wife, Margaret Mazyck, accepted on his behalf posthumously.

  • Be a South Florida STAR, win WWE tickets

    In an effort to recognize deserving South Florida youth who promote the values of the Be a STAR anti-bullying program, World Wrestling Entertainment in conjunction with The Miami Herald is accepting nominations for a special meet-n-greet before a WWE show at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

The Miami Rowing Club girls’ Junior 8 won the state championship in Sarasota. They are Gaby Diaz (coxswain), Abby Sorenson (stroke), Yailene Herrera Ortiz (seventh seat), Adrienne Orriols (sixth seat), Kamila Vasquez (5 seat), Samantha Salazar (fourth seat), Pilar Bancalari (third seat), Sol Helou (second seat) and Marissa Lynn Williford (bow).
