The SpareOne mobile phone is not for everyday chatting, and there’s no email or web-browsing. This phone is meant for emergencies — now, or up to 15 years hence. That’s how long the phone’s included single AA battery (an ultra-long-lasting Energizer Ultimate Lithium L91) is estimated to stay charged if stored unused. Once turned on, you get about 10 hours of talk time. The battery is replaceable. The phone looks pretty much like a basic cellphone (though a bit longer, at 5.5 inches by 2 inches, but very slim and featherweight), with pushbutton numbers and function keys. It also has a built-in flashlight. There’s no display to see what number you’re dialing. You will need a GSM SIM card (not included), pre-loaded with minutes for domestic or international calls to dial anything other than 911. The SpareOne comes in a sturdy transparent resealable waterproof pouch to protect it from the elements, even in use. You’ll want to read the instructions thoroughly to get familiar with operation.
