TALLAHASSEE -- Junior defensive end Bjoern Werner was named a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive player.
Werner, a native of Germany, has 29 tackles, 12 1/2 tackles for loss and eight sacks for the nation’s top-ranked defense.
The winner will be announced Dec. 3.
Maryland’s motivation
While Florida State will be looking to clinch the ACC Atlantic Division on Saturday, its opponent, Maryland, will focuse on becoming bowl eligible.
“They’re going to be playing for a bowl game,” coach Jimbo Fisher said. “They need two wins to get in a bowl game, so we know we’re going to get their A game.
“They’re going to lay it on the line. They’re a great defensive football team and they’ve done what they’ve had to do on offense. Randy [ Edsall] is a good football coach. They’ll be ready to go, and we’re going to have to play well.”
Surgery for Thompson
Senior running back Chris Thompson underwent successful ACL surgery. After fighting back from two broken vertebrae last year, the senior back rushed for nearly 700 yards this season before tearing his ACL against Miami in October.
