Glenn Garvin’s Nov. 11 column reviewing Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States, quotes Stone as saying “... that the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan was not good.” As a World War II Army veteran who, along with thousands of others, spent the summer of 1945 in the Philippines preparing for the invasion of Japan, I object to that view.
It’s been well established that by eliminating the need for the invasion, countless American, as well as Japanese, lives were saved. I personally agree with this because I was part of the occupation forces sent to Japan, where our first job was to destroy large accumulations of its military equipment — planes, tanks, artillery, small arms — that would have been used against us.
