In his Nov. 11 Other Views piece, A plan for improved elections, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez blamed the Nov. 6 election debacle on “unprecedented challenges” rather than his administration’s failure. Although he knew what was coming and had time to prepare, he didn’t. Supervisor of Elections Penelope Townsley warned voters of long lines, comparing what they would experience to the 12-hour waits for iPhones. Instead of increasing the number of early-voting sites and adding staff and equipment, she counseled voters to “prepare in advance” by studying the ballot.
We expected more from Gimenez than crocodile tears and a blue-ribbon committee.
