Re the Nov. 11 article Florida group pushes for more alimony reform: As a former divorce researcher, there are several reasons for alimony reform, but here are two quick ones: First, the research literature is unambiguously clear that in terms of developmental outcomes, children fare worst in single-mother households. Permanent alimony virtually mandates single-mother households so that the recipient doesn’t lose their life-long alimony payments.
Second, in today’s economy, many young adult children of divorce are in dire need of financial assistance. So, who is most deserving of the payer’s money: The former spouse, the children of divorce lawyers or your children? Where would you rather the money go?
