I was amazed to watch the video of all those concerned folks wading in the tide water on Alton Road and 10th Street on Miami Beach recently. They were claiming the flooded street was a result of climate change, or maybe they were using a commonly occurring event to scare people into supporting their cause.
The flooding is caused by high tides called spring tides, which have nothing to do with the season. Oceans exhibit a much greater tidal range around the time of the full moon and new moon. This is when the moon and sun are either together in the sky or are on opposite sides of the heavens. Higher tides occur during these moon phases because the sun also exerts a gravitational pull on our oceans.
The flooding has occurred from the time the road was built simply because the road was constructed at an elevation lower than the highest tides.
