Gates Foundation helps OPKO tackle TB

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $1 million to Miami-based OPKO Health to develop a diagnostic test for tuberculosis, OPKO announced Tuesday.

The test is intended to distinguish between latent and active tuberculosis.

It will use OPKO’s proprietary molecular diagnostics technology, which allows simple blood tests to be measured for biomarkers for a variety of diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and various malignancies, the company said.

OPKO’s chief executive is Miami physician-entrepreneur Phillip Frost.
