Dillard wins three-way tiebreaker to make playoffs

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Sophomore Jorge Garcia shot a 5-over-par 149 to win the FHSAA Class 1A individual title, and Matthew Mourin and Tyler Strafaci shot 74 and 75 in the final round to help the American Heritage boys’ golf team cruise to its first state team title.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Tara Brannen, Monarch, girls’ volleyball: Brannen had 19 kills to lead the Knights (17-3) over South Broward in the Region 4-7A quarterfinals, clinching its first berth in the regional semifinals.

Brandon Powell, Deerfield Beach, football: Powell rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns and recovered a key fumble to help the Bucks (5-3, 4-1) beat previously undefeated South Plantation (8-1, 4-1) 21-14.

Brandon Goldman and Jackson Harrington, St. Thomas Aquinas, boys’ swimming: Goldman won the 100 backstroke, and Harrington won the diving title to help the Raiders win the Region 4-3A team title.

Daesha Rogers, American Heritage, girls’ cross-country: The eighth-grade sensation outsprinted Pine Crest star freshman Julia Montgomery to win the District 14-2A title in a season-best 18:22.

Kirsten Kuhl, Douglas, girls’ volleyball: Kuhl had 15 kills, 10 assists and four blocks to lead the Eagles (21-2) over Cypress Bay 25-14, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21 in the Class 8A regional quarterfinals.

Carly Goldstein, Coral Glades, girls’ golf: The LSU commit shot a 4-under 140 to win the Class 2A state title.

Taj McGowan, Hallandale, football: McGowan rushed for 111 yards, including a go-ahead, 3-yard touchdown run with 4:10 left to lift the Chargers (5-4) to an 18-12 win over Cardinal Gibbons (7-2).

Tomas Gimenez-Beron, Nova, boys’ cross-country: The sophomore standout finished second in 17:38 to help the Titans win the District 11-4A title.

Brittany Hammond and Casey Francis, Pine Crest, girls’ swimming: Hammond won the 500 free (All-American automatic) in 4:51.48 and was second in the 200 free, and Francis won the 200 IM and finished second in the 500 free to help the Panthers win the Region 4-1A championships.

Morgan Rodriguez and Victoria Vigarino, Cardinal Gibbons, girls’ cross-country: Rodriguez defended her District 15-3A title and Victoria Vigarino finished fifth to help the Chiefs edge Archbishop 34-35 for the team title.

Savannah Davis, Pompano Beach, girls’ volleyball: Davis had 19 kills, 14 digs and 13 service points to lead the Tornadoes over Riviera Beach Suncoast in the Region 4-5A quarterfinals.

Christine Creighton and Kelsey Blow, North Broward, girls’ soccer: Creighton had a goal and assist and Blow added a goal in a 2-1 victory over Coral Springs Charter.
