American beats Goleman, wins District 15-7A title

Special to The Miami Herald

It was an efficient performance for American’s special teams as both Jawill Davis and Karon Jackson returned punts in the first quarter to help the Patriots (6-2, 3-0) defeat Goleman on 28-7 Saturday night at Ted Hendricks Stadium and win the District 15-7A title.

Ed Crouch led the offense with 128 yards passing as well as a touchdown toss. Kevin Pollock led the Patriot ground game with 48 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Larry Evans came in the second half and also contributed with 32 yards on six carries.

Goleman (2-7, 1-2) were led offensively by running back Jeremiah Oyetunji. He led all rushers in the game with 160 yards on 26 carries and scored a touchdown.

• Braddock 6, Sunset 3: Jaime Jarquin authored a fourth-quarter, 99-yard scoring drive for Braddock’s only points of the game and the Bulldogs (2-7, 1-4) defense held strong in a 6-3 win against Sunset (1-8, 0-4) at Tropical Park.

Jarquin, a quarterback who also returns punts, fielded a punt at his own 1-yard line, a miscue that he made up for with a 30-yard run, a drive-saving first down pass to receiver Jordan Chacon, and a 37-yard run.

After a holding penalty nullified a 3-yard touchdown run by Jarquin, he recomposed his team and punched in another 3-yard score three plays later on fourth and goal.

“He knew that he messed up with the punt return. He knows he’s not supposed to catch that,” said Braddock coach Frank Rojas. Jarquin finished with 103 yards rushing. “He knew right away that it was his fault, so he wasn’t going to let it happen.”

A failed extra point and botched kickoff on the ensuing play gave the Knights the ball at midfield with kicker Andy Valdes-Recias — who had already made a 23-yard field goal — waiting in the wings. But quarterback Alvaro Leon (5 for 13, 26 yards) fumbled the snap and defensive tackle Andy Garcia blew a hole in the Sunset offensive line, paving the way for linebacker David Perez to recover the ball.

It wasn’t the first big play by the Bulldogs defense.

After a Juwell Laguerre blocked punt set gave the Knights possession on the 10-yard line in the second quarter, the Braddock defense repelled Sunset and forced them to settle for Valdes Recias’ field goal.
