Heritage, Pine Crest advance to state

The American Heritage boys and Pine Crest girls avenged earlier defeats to win in close calls.

Broward County dominated the Region 4-1A swim meet at Nova Southeastern University on Saturday. A large number of county athletes won individual titles, including several double-event winners. South Florida HEAT’s Clara Smiddy and Sagemont’s Jemal Le Grand each won a pair of titles and will advance to the state finals in multiple events.

Smiddy, still recovering from knee surgery, made easy work of her competition in the 100 freestyle. Smiddy bested second-place Caroline Nava by more than to a half a second.

“It was a good setup for states,” she said. “I need to work on some turns and my stroke a little bit.”

In her second race, Smiddy trailed in the 100 backstroke from the start and needed a late surge to take the lead. With less than 15 yards in the race, Smiddy closed in on St. Andrew’s Tasija Karosas. As the racers neared the wall, Smiddy held on two win by two one-hundredths of a second.

Like Smiddy, Le Grand narrowly edged his opponent for a close win in the 100 free. Near the final turn, Le Grand — who trailed the first 75 yards — rapidly closed on American Heritage’s Daniel Spas. Le Grand, hampered by a bad start, caught Spas as the swimmers neared the wall. Le Grand edged Spas by a less than 1/10th of a second.

“I saw him slowing down when we did our flip and I said to myself ‘this is my time,’ ” Le Grand said. “It wasn’t the time I was looking for, but it’s a good time.”

In the team competition, American Heritage Plantation edged Pine Crest by nine points for the boys’ title. The Patriots had a number of individual event winners. Spas won the 50 free with an All-American consideration time of 20.91 sections. Spas was instrumental in the Patriots’ win, helping secure a win the 200 free relay and a top-three place in the 400 free relay.

“Coming into the meet, I knew it was going to be really close,” Heritage coach Nobutaka Tan said. “We talked to the kids and told them they needed to step up.”

On the girls’ side, Pine Crest avenged its first district loss in 25 years. The Panthers lost to Heritage in the district meet last week and was looking for payback. Pine Crest won two of the relays and had a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Senior Brittany Hammond was key to the Panthers win. The senior anchored the 400 free relay and the 500 free with an All-American automatic time of 4:51.48.

“I didn’t know what to expect. I dropped close to 10 seconds from prelims,” she said about the 500 free. “I need to learn to get up and race in the morning.”

A number of county athletes had times that should be low enough to advance to the state tournament next week. Only the winner of each event automatically qualifies for the state final. After all regional events are done, the top 20 fastest times in each event advance.
