Re the Oct. 23 story Rick Scott’s education priorities: Keep funding steady, expand charter schools: The governor’s idea to focus more on new technologies to help students is a great idea. Not every student learns from the traditional methods. There has always been huge pressure on teachers and students to perform well on standardized tests; there was a lack of focus on other areas.
With Scott’s proposal, there would be an expansion in charter schools and deregulation of school districts. Schools would have more flexibility when it comes to textbooks. Programs and tutoring centers with high success rates would receive some funding.
Scott may be trying to make up for lost popularity when he initially cut the education budget when he first came to office.
And with Scott planning on running for a second term in 2014, he now seems to recognize that education is a top priority to Floridians.
I hope that he will still feel this way about education if he gets reelected.
