At a recent political forum, I was struck not so much by what was said or the usual suspects who attended, but of a major void. The fact that State Rep. Ron Saunders was not in the mix is a significant loss for all of the Keys and Monroe County.
Saunders lost the District 39 primary, as only 25 percent of eligible voters went to the polls in Monroe County. That’s unfortunate. The Keys lost a chance to send someone to the state Senate who has lived here and knows all of our issues. He has been an exemplary advocate for Monroe County and is respected by his peers in the Legislature.
It’s a shame that more people didn’t come out to vote here, as opposed to his opponent’s supporters on the mainland, who managed to get out the vote. I will wish Rep. Saunders the best and hope he finds some way to continue in politics.
