A big thank you to the folks who created the Handybar, a wonderful portable “handle” that helps mobility-challenged individuals get in and out of cars. The Handybar resembles the handle and spout contraption at gas station pumps, but instead of putting the metal “spout” into the gas tank, you slide it into the U-shaped striker plate attached to the inside door frame. This anchors the Handybar’s 7-inch “handle,” providing a sturdy grip for entering or leaving the car. (The Handybar must be removed from the striker plate before the door can closed). The bright red plastic handle has integrated finger grips to prevent slippage. I have come to depend on the Handybar when chauffeuring around my frail mom, who also uses the handle for leverage in getting into a comfortable sitting position once in the car.
Handybar is $39.99 at www.avin.ca; or call Avenue Innovations at 888-738-0611.
