Bowling is a major part of their lives, and these 16-year-olds have been bowling alongside each other the past nine years. They push each other everyday to get better.
In league play last season, Melissa led the Girls Division in High Average with a 200, and Alex led the Boys Division with a 205. Their team finished first with a winning percentage of 80 percent. In tournament play, they teamed to win in Scratch Doubles with a 1,416 series (236 average for each).
Melissa recently competed in the Tournament of the Americas, winning a gold medal for the USA in the girls’ division. Both participated in the Pepsi Championship and Florida Youth State Tournament. Nationally, they represented Florida in the JR Gold in Indianapolis.
Living in the Kendall area, Melissa is a student at Ferguson High School, and Alex attends Miami Christian School.
Triathlete Carlos Dolabella of Key Biscayne was third, winning bronze in the men’s 50-54 age group, during the 2012 ITU Age Group Sprint World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
“I think I had my best race of the year. It was an incredible competitive field and I’m very happy with third place,” said Dolabella, representing Team USA. “I kept focused the whole way, and if it was not for the tough competition, I wouldn’t have had the race I had.”
Dolabella completed a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike and a 3.1-mile run in 1 hour 8 minutes 48 seconds. Visit www.usatriathlon.org for information on Team USA.
The Belen Jesuit Prep boys’ varsity cross-country team captured its 14th county championship by winning the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo High School Invitational at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.
The Wolverines scored 19 points, besting a field of 59 teams. Columbus was runner-up with 55 points and Ferguson third with 113 points. Ransom Everglades placed fourth with 129 points and Coral Reef fifth at 205. Coral Park was sixth at 213, Varela seventh at 241, Coral Gables eighth at 295, Sunset ninth at 298 and South Dade 10th at 305.
Belen senior Avery Lopez won the 3.1-mile race in 15 minutes 58 seconds, topping 234 other runners. Teammate Fabian Tomas, a junior, was runner-up in 16:13.
Senior Danny Fernandez of Columbus was third in 16:20. Belen junior Michael Magoulas was fourth in 16:40 and teammate Ryan Rodriguez, a sophomore, fifth in 16:50.
Carol City senior Marcus Smith was sixth in 16:54, followed by Killian senior Fabian Delgado (16:57), Belen junior Osiel Gonzalez (17:00), Columbus senior Danny Linares (17:02) and Columbus sophomore Petey Hernandez (17:07).

• In the girls’ varsity race, Ferguson won the team title with 22 points. Lourdes was second with 58 points, followed by Coral Reef, Carrollton and South Dade.
Ransom Everglades was sixth, and Northwestern placed seventh. Central finished eighth, Coral Park ninth and Gulliver Prep 10th of 23 teams.
