My wife and I were fortunate enough to travel to France this summer. The highlight was our visit to the beaches of Normandy and to the American cemetery where more than 9,300 soldiers are buried. Nowhere on the grave markers is Republican or Democrat written, nor do they mention abortion, vouchers, traditional marriage, assault weapons or voter IDs.
Both my father and my father-in-law fought in World War II — one a Democrat, the other a Republican. Discussions were always respectful because they were on the same team, just coming from different points of view.
Elected officials should be compelled to visit the graves of the soldiers who defended our freedoms. Citizens lose respect for their elected officials when they forget that they work for us and not the other way around.
