Turnover problems
One of the reasons the Panthers have eight losses despite returning most of a roster that had eight wins last seasons is turnovers.
FIU’s interceptions are down from 14 in 2011 to seven this year, a number that would tie the 1-11 2007 FIU team for fewest interceptions in a season. Their 12 total turnovers forced is still two under the record low of 14 set in 2004. The five fumbles recovered also undercuts the current record low of six, set in 2004 and tied in 2006 and 2011.
The 2011 Panthers turned the ball over 15 times, the fewest of any FIU team, and had a plus-5 turnover margin, the best in FIU’s first 10 seasons. This year, FIU is minus-six in turnover margin.
• FIU opened as a 5.5-point favorite against South Alabama despite a 1-8 record, but the spread is down to 3.5 at most sportsbooks.
