TALLAHASSEE -- A trio FSU players were announced as semifinalists for national awards Monday.
Junior defensive end Bjoern Werner — who is tied for the team lead with eight sacks — was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation’s top defensive player. Redshirt senior quarterback EJ Manuel was named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, given yearly to the nation’s top quarterback. And at cornerback, Miami Norland’s Xavier Rhodes (redshirt junior) was named one of 15 finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award — presented to the top defensive back in the country.
• For their play in the win over Duke, linebacker Christian Jones and defensive back Ronald Darby were named Atlantic Coast Conference Players of the Week at their respective positions. Jones totaled 11 tackles, three for a loss, against the Blue Devils, and Darby played a key role in holding ACC-leading wide receiver Conner Vernon to just three catches for 12 yards.
• FSU has its first week off since the season started. After playing nine weeks in a row, FSU plays just twice over the next 20 days before its regular-season finale against Florida.
