Paul Cejas and Emilio Gonzalez’s Oct. 22 article, Security is about more than weapons , points out that the 1 percent of the U.S. budget spent on diplomacy and development is not only a moral imperative and crucial to national security. It also can create good trading partners with economic benefits for all.
When we look at one small portion of development funding — the empowerment of women and girls — we can see that these efforts would unlock a global economic boon created by the productive participation of half the world’s population in fast-growing markets. Money well spent.
