Broward cancels Thursday, Friday outdoor games

Because of the threat of severe weather related to the passing of Hurricane Sandy, Broward County Schools canceled or postponed all outdoor sporting events Thursday and Friday.

According to the Broward County Athletic Association, the scheduled football and swimming events such as district games that were postponed will be made up either on Saturday or Monday.

Cardinal Gibbons’ football game against American Heritage was one that was believed to be rescheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Heritage, but the BCAA said official confirmation of when games will be made up will likely come Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

•  District 12-8A final — Western d. Cypress bay 25-21, 25-11, 25-27, 20-25, 15-10: Alexa Oblak led the Wildcats in a five-set match for the district final over the Lightning.

Oblak racked up 27 kills, five digs and four blocks.

Amanda Medlock contributed 14 kills, 14 digs, 12 service points.

While Gabi Matos’ 42 assists, 19 points and a kill helping Western improve to 15-6.

• District 16-7A final — St. Thomas d. South Broward 25-9, 25-9, 25-13: The Raiders’ Mackenzie Zielinski had 21 assists, 8 digs and 5 aces to help St. Thomas defeat South Broward (11-9) in the district final.

Assisting in the win Paris Aubin added 12 assists and three digs for the Raiders (19-3).

•  Late Tuesday — District 15-3A semifinals — Doctors Charter d. Mater Lakes 25-23, 25-20, 25-16: Carol Sayori Assato Kiam 6 aces, 20 kills, 28 digs. Brianna Bruny 7 blocks, 10 kills, 23 digs. Allison Yao 4 aces, 13 digs, 35 assists.

• Late Tuesday — District 16-7A semifinals — Westminster Christian d. Marathon 25-7, 25-15, 25-9: Kelsey Taylor 30 points, 6 digs. Susie Forbes 17 digs, 4 assists. Sammy Ceballos 18 kills, 5 digs. WCS 22-4.

• Late Tuesday — District 15-6A semifinals — Archbishop McCarthy d. Pines Charter 25-20, 25-9, 25-15: Natalia Thomas 8 points, 3 aces, 13 kills, 8 digs. Melissa Bandera 16 spikes, 26 assists, 9 digs. Brooke Wilder 9 points, 7 kills. AM 14-10.

•  Late Tuesday — District 15-6A semifinals — Hollywood Hills d. Fort Lauderdale 25-3, 25-7, 25-6.

•  Late Tuesday — District 13-4A semifinals — Cardinal Gibbons d. Pine Crest 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22: Savannah Stones 20 digs, 3 assists, 9 service points.Ali Jacobs 13 kills, 2 blocks, 13 digs, 8 points, 4 aces. Sarah Martin 39 assists, 4 kills, 2 blocks, 10 digs, 4 service points. CG 11-10.
