It’s no fun being sick. Victoria Justice had to pull out of her Miami Beach red-carpet appearance two weeks ago to promote Fun Size, her big screen comedy, out Friday.
“I had an ear infection plus a really bad cold that moved to my chest,’’ explained Justice from her home in Los Angeles. “It was annoying!”
Fully recovered, the Nickelodeon princess ( Victorious) is raring to talk about the movie, which follows her and some friends one crazy Halloween night. Victoria plays Wren, who is at odds with her party hearty single mom ( Chelsea Handler) and annoying younger brother.
“It’s an epic coming-of-age story in a lot of ways, and I really related to my character,” says Justice, 19. “She’s a really real teenage girl. She’s not over glamorized or the popular girl at school. She’s focused on her education and has a little bit of teen angst. I liked the fact that she was flawed.”
Another thing Justice could relate to: Wren spends most of the movie in a Wizard of Oz Dorothy costume. The Hollywood, Fl., native (she left for L.A. at age 11) remembers dressing up in the same outfit at age 7 or 8.
“I have a picture of me standing in front of my house with little pigtails and the blue dress my grandma made me. It’s pretty crazy that I’m wearing the same thing years later in Fun Size.”
Justice remembers a number of Halloweens spent trick or treating along Harrison Street. “We’d walk around, and all the kids would meet up there. The houses were always decorated really awesomely and had the best candy!”
Dorothy and Wren aren’t so different: “When she goes to Oz, it’s a coming of age story for her as well,’’ says Justice. “She realizes there’s no place like home and staying true to yourself.”
The singer/actress doesn’t sound like she’s returning to TV anytime soon.
“Being on Victorious was great, but super demanding and sometimes grueling because there was music and performances. That added a whole other layer,’’ she says. “I had so much fun, and I loved it, but I think for now I want to continue doing films.”
