Basketball

More than a few high school basketball coaches have stayed up designing defenses to slow down explosive Deerfield Beach 6-3 guard Terence Johnson.

With Johnson giving an oral commitment to South Alabama, the 2011-12 Miami Herald’s All-Broward first-team selection becomes a headache for the Sun Belt Conference next season.

Bucks coach Kenny Brown sees Johnson — the biggest weapon on a loaded Bucks team expected to roll to the Class 8A state final four this season — making an immediate impact for the Jaguars.

“Terence can knock down the midrange shot and brings a tough defender,” Brown said. “South Alabama knows he will be well seasoned. He will play both ends of the floor. At that level it makes a difference. I think his intangibles will get him on the floor right away.”

South Alabama beat out Eastern Kentucky, Mercer, Boston University, College of Charleston and Richmond, among others, for Florida’s 3st1-ranked prospect in the 2013 class, according to sourcehoops.com.

Johnson scored at least 25 points in seven games and averaged 22 points to lead the Bucks to a 22-5 record and berth in the Class 8A regional finals, its deepest playoff run in 12 years.
