• Sept. 28, 2011: Marlins trade Jhan Marinez and Osvaldo Martinez to the White Sox in exchange for the right to hire Ozzie Guillen as manager. Guillen signs a four year, $10 million contract.
• April 4: Marlins lose 4-1 to St. Louis in their opener, the first regular-season game at Marlins Park. The Marlins go 8-14 in April.
• April 6: Time Magazine quotes Guillen as saying: I love Fidel Castro ... I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that [expletive] is still here. Guillen, asked about the comments, apologizes and says: Im sure Im against [the way] he thinks, the way he treats people and the way he treats his country for a long time.
• April 10: The Marlins suspend Guillen five games for his Castro comments. Guillen is contrite in a news conference.
• April 17: Guillen returns to the dugout against the Cubs and says: I dont think Im going to change, but I wont be talking about things that arent my business. I hope this mistake makes me a better person.
• May: Better times for Guillen. The Marlins go 21-8 in May, by far their best month of the season.
• June: Marlins follow their terrific May with an 8-18 swoon in June. On June 26, with his team 34-40, Guillen said he he is ready to erupt at his team if they keep losing. They make me miserable, he said. I will make them miserable, too.
• July 25: Marlins trade Hanley Ramirez to the Dodgers. Guillen says later that he cannot be blamed for Ramirezs performance because he hasnt hit in three, four years.
• Sept. 15: Guillen blasts ESPNs Buster Olney on Twitter, alleging Olney suggested the Marlins dont play hard. Olney actually said theres a perception among some rival evaluators that the team has not been competitive.
• Sept. 21: Guillen addresses rumors he might be fired: If Jeffrey [Loria] doesnt think Im doing the job I should do,... its not the first time he has fired a manager. Look yourself in the mirror and ask why so many [bleeping] managers come through here.
• Sept. 24: Reliever Heath Bell tells WQAM-560 that its hard to respect a guy that doesnt tell you the truth or doesnt tell you to your face. He later apologizes to Guillen, who says he respects Bell as a player but isnt sure he respects him as a person.
• Sept. 28: Guillen makes a case to keep his job, saying: I think it would be unfair if they fire me after one chance.
• Oct. 3: On the final day of the season, Guillen said he expects 100 percent to be back.
• Oct. 23: Marlins fire Guillen after a 69-93 season. I dont think its any one thing. Its all cumulative, Marlins president/baseball operations Larry Beinfest said.
