The daughter of newly elected Miami-Dade School Board member has been declared irreversibly brain dead, after a crash Friday night with a Hialeah police officer.
Andrea Castillo, 21, was declared dead shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday, said Jorge Silva, an attorney for her family. He said she is being maintained on life support so that her organs can be donated, a process expected to conclude Tuesday.
She is the daughter of Susie Castillo, who recently won a seat on the Miami-Dade School Board, and has a brother who is a senior at Ronald Reagan Senior High School in Doral.
Theyre devastated, Silva said. They are in complete and utter disbelief, and they obviously have a tremendous void in their heart and have a lot, a lot of unanswered questions.
What led to the crash Friday night between the unmarked police vehicle and the SUV driven by Andrea Castillos boyfriend was under investigation Monday.
The on-duty officer, Raul Somarriba, was heading east on East 49th Street in Hialeah. The SUV was northbound on East Ninth Court. The impact flipped the SUV; the police car jumped a median.
The condition of Castillos boyfriend, whose name was not been released, is unknown. Somarriba suffered a fractured leg and arm and head injuries, said Hialeah police.
Silva said the family wants to know why the police officer was airlifted and not the couple, who were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
A graduate of Ronald Reagan High, Castillo was a student at Miami Dade College and hoped to work in education, like her grandmother and mother. Her mother, Susie Castillo, was also the assistant to the mayor of Doral.
