Racetracks may be Broward’s hottest industry.
When compared to the national racetrack industry, Broward’s has a much larger share of the local workforce. In fact, it’s about 10 times the national average, putting it No. 1 on Broward’s list of outsized industries, according to federal statistics.
The number used to calculate each industry’s standing in the workforce is called a location quotient. It calculates how an industry’s workforce compares to the national average. If a local industry’s share of the overall workforce is the same as it is nationally, it gets a location quotient of 1. If it is half the size, it gets a location quotient of .5. Twice the size brings a location quotient of 2.
