Special to The Miami Herald

“Nura wanted New York City — it’s such an international city,” Coral Springs Christian coach Steve Fitzgerald said. “He wanted a winning culture, basketball wise and Long Island is a tournament team. Plus they’re losing three bigs, which will give Z a chance to play as a freshman. Z felt like it was a real good fit.”

The 6-6, 230-pound Zanna came into his own as a junior, averaging 22 points and 11 rebounds to power the Crusaders to a school-best 26-4 record, its first Kreul Classic title and its first berth in the Class 3A regional semifinals.

“Usually athletic bigs are not that skilled,” Fitzgerald said. “Z gives you the best of both. I think the sky is the limit for this kid.”

Fully healed from a high ankle sprain that robbed him of his explosiveness heading into the 2011-12 state playoffs, Zanna is expected to carry even more of a workload as the Crusaders renew one of the state’s most spirited District rivalries with Class 3A state runner-up Sagemont.
