Five steps to becoming un-LinkedIn

Q. A few months ago I joined LinkedIn, the social website for business, but I’ve found it to be a gigantic pain. I would really like to unsubscribe, but I have not been able to find a way to do it. What would I have to do?

LinkedIn apparently doesn’t want you to leave, because closing your account is a five-step process. But here’s how to get un-LinkedIn:

Sign in to your account. Put your cursor over your account name at the upper right side of the screen and click “settings.” On the resulting page, click “account” at the lower left side of the page. Under “helpful links,” choose “close your account.” You’ll be taken to a page titled “close account reason.” Answer the question and click “continue.” You’ll then be asked to verify the account you want to close.Q. I found the free Malwarebytes security program, which you suggested, to be more helpful than the McAfee security software that came with my computer. But because the free version of Malwarebytes required me to run it manually, I decided to upgrade to the paid version, which runs all the time. Should I drop McAfee when my current year of service is up, or continue to run both programs?

You shouldn’t run both the paid version of Malwarebyes and the paid McAfee software. Because both programs run constantly, they may interfere with each other or increase your PC’s workload to the point that the computer slows down. You didn’t have this problem with the free version of Malwarebytes because it only ran when you manually clicked on it.

I suggest you uninstall McAfee and run just the paid version of Malwarebytes, along with the firewall that comes with Windows. Or, if you want to continue with McAfee until your subscription is up, use the free version of Malwarebytes during that time.Q. My free Gmail account has been getting a huge amount of junk email recently. I usually get 50 spam emails overnight, 10 to 15 an hour during the day. Is there a way to stop this?

Every time you receive a spam email, check the box in front of it by clicking on it. Then, above the list of emails you’ll see an icon that looks like a tiny stop sign with an exclamation point on it. When you rest your cursor on the icon, you’ll see the message “report spam.” Click the icon once and the email you’ve checked will disappear from your inbox and be sent to Gmail’s spam filter, which will help block similar emails.
