St. Louis red-zone offense vs. Dolphins red-zone defense
Who won: Dolphins
The impact: Three times, St. Louis smoothly glided inside the Dolphins’ 20. The first time, the Rams came away with a field goal. The second, Greg Zuerlein missed a 37-yard field goal at the end of the first half. The third, the Rams got a touchdown, but needed a fourth down. Not counting field goal attempts, the Rams snapped the ball 10 times inside the red zone, gained a net of four yards and took a 10-yard penalty. That’s how you can amass 462 yards of offense and only 14 points.
Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein vs. Sun Life Stadium’s East Uprights
Who won: The Uprights.
The impact: Zuerlein, who hadn’t missed all season, nailed his two field goal attempts in the first quarter at the West uprights. But each time he went East, his big booming leg couldn’t blast with enough accuracy, going wide left each time. He’s been so good that Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he thought the odds were better of Zuerlein hitting a 66-yard field goal than the Rams getting a first down on fourth-and-7 with four seconds remaining in the game.
Dolphins punting vs. St. Louis punt return
Who won: Dolphins
The impact: Five Dolphins drives, not counting the end of first half kneel down, lasted four or fewer plays, yet the Rams’ average starting position was their own 20. That’s effective punting by Brandon Fields, who got good length and placement on his punts. Instead of room to run, St. Louis returner Jenoris Jenkins found usually room to oops — he averaged 3.5 yards per return, fumbled one return out of bounds when hit by long snapper John Denney and lost two yards on the final return.
